Post President's Corner

Hampton Roads Post Members,

We had a great event last month – thank you to the Old Dominion University (ODU) Student Post for hosting and attending! Before the main presentation by Jacobs, we had the pleasure of viewing a presentation by two Grassfield High School Students on their senior capstone project, which the Hampton Roads Post sponsored this year. We look forward to future collaborations with ODU and our K-12 STEM partners.

Our May program consists of a site tour of the Greer Environmental Sciences Center at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach.  Kyle Jacocks and Eric Harrison with Hourigan Construction will give a brief presentation before leading the group on a tour of this state-of-the-art facility. For a sneak peak of the building, take a look at Hourigan’s construction webcam and their drone flyover.  The site visit will allow a limited number of attendees, so monitor our website and look for email communications for registration information.

In June, we will hold our annual board transition and scholarship awards program at the Westin in Virginia Beach Town Center. If you know a high school senior or current college student who is or will be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate engineering, architecture, interior design, or construction management degree program, please encourage them to apply for our scholarship. Full details are available here:

Each year, the Hampton Roads Post sponsors several rising 10th-12th grade high school students to attend STEM construction camps, which serve to broaden their engineering knowledge and apply problem solving techniques in a team setting. This is a fun, educational opportunity for our future engineers but we are still in need of mentors, particularly SAME Young Members, who can assist with guiding, training, education and leading the campers through various activities.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact CAPT George Bonner today (757-628-4277,

As we gear up to transition Post leadership in June, please consider volunteer opportunities in 2017-2018. If you are interested in serving next year, please contact me by phone or email (757-490-9264 or For reference, the proposed 2017-2018 Board of Directors slate is included below and there are several vacant positions. All other positions may be appointed by the board; the full list of volunteer opportunities is available on our website ( We will vote on the 2017-2018 slate of Officers and Directors via email, so stay tuned more details within the next few weeks.

Editor's Note

Some of you have known me for a long time and you know a couple of things are fundamental to who I am…that I love working with little ones and that my “someday” wish is to work for a children’s foundation (hopefully with a rocking chair in my office!). No…that hasn’t happened yet, but I’ve been thinking a lot about what some people speak and write about…”realigning” my actions to my purpose.

While it has been an honor to work with the Hampton Roads Post, there are so many children in need and I feel called to focus whatever time and attention I have on making their lives better. If I can work for a children’s foundation that would be awesome, but if not, I am planning to volunteer for one. With the level of commitment I see myself making, sadly, I will be stepping down from the SAME Board at the end of the month when the new Board transitions.

If you would like to volunteer or have a marketing or graphics person with some spare time, please contact Nicole Foster, our current Post President. She is coordinating new volunteers for the next board and can be reached at 757.490.9264 or

I have loved serving SAME and wish the Post and all of you, all the best!

Rebecca Henry Receives Leader of Excellence Award

Virginia Beach, VA – MSA, P.C. would like to congratulate Rebecca Henry, MSA's Director of Operations, on receiving the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Hampton Roads Chapter's Leader of Excellence Award.  While normally CREW only recognizes individual members with a Member of Excellence award, local leadership created a new award for Henry based on her hard work and dedication as a committee chair.

During the award presentation, CREW Hampton Roads President, Victoria Paul, stated, "We have a member who has gone above and beyond her agreed duties of service in her position within our organization…This member, while knocking the socks off whoever she interacted with across committee lines within our chapter, was also busy shattering a ceiling in her own professional world. This level of service and achievement cannot go unrecognized."

MSA, P.C. is a Veteran Owned Small Business headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  The firm provides environmental consulting, planning, surveying, civil and environmental engineering, and landscape architecture for public and private projects.  More information about MSA, P.C. can be found at

Hampton Roads Post Announces Scholarship Program

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), Hampton Roads Post intends to award multiple $500 – $3,000 scholarships to Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design and Construction Management Students for the 2017-2018 school year.

Applicants must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a full-time undergraduate Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design or Construction Management degree program at an accredited college or university in the fall term of 2017. Applicants who have earned an undergraduate degree or who are enrolled in a graduate degree program are not eligible. All applicants must also have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 basis) to be eligible to apply. The minimum GPA requirement applies to both high school and college students. No scholarship will be awarded for those pursuing an associate, second undergraduate or graduate school degree. Students attending a community or junior college must be enrolled in a program of studies designed to allow the student to transfer directly into a four-year program. Applicants who receive an appointment to one of the U.S. Military Academies (or affiliated preparatory schools) or are awarded a full scholarship at any accredited U.S. post-secondary institution of higher education are not eligible to receive funds from this program. A full scholarship is usually defined as one that provides for payment of tuition, books, lab fees, and other related expenses.

There is no requirement for the student or parent to be part of a SAME Post. However, preference will be given to students who are members of a SAME Student Post or whose parents, guardians, or sponsors are members of SAME. Sponsors must provide a letter of recommendation as part of the application package.

Application forms are available here:

The completed application, including transcripts, must be emailed or postmarked no later than May 24, 2017.

Scholarships will be presented at our June 21, 2017 luncheon.

Please mail or electronically send completed applications to:

A Note of Thanks

Ms. Foster,

I’ve been privileged to benefit from the generosity of the SAME Hampton Roads Post, first by receiving full sponsorship to attend the USAFA Construction Camp in 2014, and secondly as a recipient of your 2016-2017 Scholarship Program.  Each was instrumental in building upon my experiences and pursuits, especially evident and appreciated as I complete my freshman year at ODU for Mechanical Engineering.
