Title: First and Foremost: Reconciling the Engineer's Duty to the Public with other Responsibilities

Presenter(s): Betsy Dulin, P.E., Esq., President and Owner of 38th ED, LLC


The presentation will cover basic rules of professional conduct for professional engineers in Virginia, as well as national models, focusing on the engineer's primary duty to protect the public health, safety and welfare. Potential conflicts among the engineer's legal and ethical duties to the public, employers, and clients will be explored through the use of relevant examples from the headlines, as well as lesser publicized but commonly encountered situations.

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon completion of the session, attendees should be able to:

  1. Identify the primary categories and types of responsibilities identified in state, national, and organizational rules of professional conduct and ethics.
  2. Identify common areas of tension/conflict among different legal and ethical responsibilities.
  3. Formulate an approach for communicating and analyzing potential ethical issues.

 CE/PDH: One (1) CEU credit/PDH credit will be issued for attending this luncheon.
